Competition Law

Competition law is law that promotes or seeks to maintain market competition by regulating anti-competitive conduct by companies. Competition law is known as antitrust law in the United States and anti-monopoly law in China and Russia. In previous years it has been known as trade practices law in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Whilst all companies must abide by the law, BIFA, as a Trade Association, has to ensure that in any meeting or similar gathering that it organises, all participants are reminded of Competition Law at the outset.

The following statement has been drafted by a solicitor specialising in Competition Law and is to be read out at every appropriate meeting.

“Discussion at all BIFA meetings is confined to general industry and/or association affairs. Persons chairing meetings, BIFA Secretariat staff or persons representing BIFA will not entertain discussion on matters likely to contravene competition law, (including, but not limited to pricing, discounts, price timing and other sensitive information).”

Any questions regarding BIFA and Competition Law should be directed to BIFA Director General, Robert Keen.
