Government letter to haulage industry
The Government has already announced easements surrounding Drivers’ Hours, which has proven unpopular with Trade Associations, Employers and Drivers themselves.
On the 20th July the Government issued the following open letter to the road sector, outlining a package of measures, which can be viewed by clicking on the following link HGV driver shortage letter to industry - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
This matter has been discussed at a meeting of BIFA’s Maritime, Road and Rail Policy Group, and the letter does not appear to address some of the longer-term issues to make the role of a Driver more appealing.
The RHA, who attended the meeting, highlighted the issue of wage inflation within the sector, around large supermarkets/retailers having to increase their wage structures to keep trucks moving and products on the shelf/instore.
As part of the Department for Transport’s consideration as to whether a further relaxation to the Drivers’ Hours rules would be appropriate, there is a call for evidence underway, closing on 26 July 2021.
