As recently communicated in BIFAlink and on BIFAlink TV, a new EU Entry-Exit System (EES) is being introduced. At the time our communications were published, the implementation date was unclear, but anticipated to be “sometime in October 2024”.
It has since been confirmed that the implementation has be postponed until 10th November 2024, with the possibility that date being delayed by another week.
The entry-exit system (EES), which requires every non-EU citizen to register biometric data (such as fingerprints) at the border threatens to cause delays to supply chains, especially across the Channel.
The main concern was that passengers registering their details on machines at the ports of entry/exit would cause delays, which would inevitably have a knock on effect on supply chains. It is hoped that deferring the implementation date will allow for the development of apps which will permit travellers to register their details before travelling to the port, and therefore minimising delays.
The new system monitors people entering the territory of the EU and their compliance with the 90/180 day rule, a point, which all must be aware of.
There has been little interest in this very short delay in implementing the system, some note that it will avoid interfering with the last UK half term holiday, however, some have noted that potentially it could be implemented when traffic levels are increasing in the run up to Christmas.
However, it is important for Members to be aware of this newly announced date and plan how to comply with the new system.
