These plans to scale up affordable, clean, homegrown power and build green industries in Britain it is argued will boost the country’s energy security and independence and maintain a world-leading position in achieving net zero.
Alongside the Powering Up Britain – Net Zero Growth Plan, the UK Government has also published a consultation to explore domestic measures to mitigate carbon leakage risk.
The Addressing carbon leakage risk to support decarbonisation consultation considers a range of potential policy measures to mitigate carbon leakage risk in the future and ensure UK industry has the best policy environment to decarbonise.
Potential policies include a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), mandatory product standards (MPS), and other policy measures to help grow the market for low carbon products, as well as embodied emissions reporting that could support the implementation of these policies.
If implemented, a number of these measures would apply to imported goods. Therefore, we are really interested in getting the views of JCCC members.
The consultation will remain open until 22 June 2023, and further information can be found on the GOV.UK consultation page: www.gov.uk/government/consultations/addressing-carbon-leakage-risk-to-support-decarbonisation
