We have received the following update from DEFRA, the government department responsible for, amongst others matters, clean air.
Many will have read the recent announcements concerning the extension of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, which is outside DEFRA’s area of responsibility, but the following update was issued yesterday.
Bristol
Bristol’s Class D CAZ is successfully live as of 00:01, Monday 28 November.
Uptake of grants under the Clean Air Fund to upgrade vehicles has been strong, and Bristol City Council estimates that over 71% vehicles are already Clean Air Zone compliant.
Bristol was added to the Government’s vehicle checker service in February 2022.

Tyneside (Newcastle and Gateshead)
Tyneside is also planning to introduce its CAZ for non-compliant taxis, buses, coaches and HGVs on 30 January 2023, and for non-compliant vans/LGVs from July 2023. You can check if you will be charged in these areas on the vehicle checker.
Applications for vehicle upgrade grants opened on Monday 21 November along with applications for exemptions. To apply and find out further information on Tyneside’s ‘Class C’ CAZ please visit breathe-cleanair.
Sheffield
Sheffield is due to launch their “Class C” CAZ on 27 February 2023. You can check if you will be charged in this area on the vehicle checker.
Sheffield has also announced that from 12 December 2022, eligible businesses and residents may be able to apply for financial support to upgrade to cleaner vehicles. To apply and find out further information about Sheffield’s Class C CAZ, please visit the Council’s website.
Bradford
Bradford’s Class C CAZ has been live since 26 September 2022. Non-compliant vehicles driven in Bradford are now subject to charge.
